这首歌曲是由女作曲家Carrie Minetta Jacobs-Bond（1862-1946）1909年于加利福尼亚州河滨市（Riverside, California）的一家名叫米申酒店（Mission Inn）的教会酒店中所作。歌词创作于一天黄昏她在位于4楼的酒店房间内欣赏日落时，而曲调则是三个月后漫步于莫哈韦沙漠（Mojave Desert）时所写。这首歌随后成为了她销量最好的一首歌，经翻唱、演绎无数，而米申酒店的钟琴也年复一年，每晚演奏这首歌曲。
